Monday, September 29th, 2008

It’s not uncommon for a homeowner to decide that a kitchen remodel is needed.  After all, it doesn’t take much or long for a kitchen to become outdated and less than functional.  Your kitchen countertops are among the most important aspects of your kitchen.  This area is used for storage and more importantly, for the preparation of your food.  You want it to be not only beautiful, but functional and clean.  These are just a few of the reasons why many homeowners opt to enjoy a hardwood countertop in their homes.  You could decide to have hardwood countertops through the entire kitchen or just have a wood block inlaid your other countertop material for use as a durable and attractive cutting board.  There are three main types of hardwood countertop construction to consider.

Hardwood Countertop

The first type of hardwood countertop is the oiled wood.  Planks of wood are used to create the durable surface of the countertop.  Some of the advantages of this kind of countertop is that more resistant to heat than some of the other wood styles and is better able to withstand the hard knocks that occur in any used kitchen.  If the surface of the oiled wood hardwood countertop ends up scratched or damaged, all can be corrected by sanding and applying another coat of food safe oil.

One of the more moderately priced hardwood countertop options is the lacquered countertop.  In addition to being affordable, this one can also be found in a huge range of colors and wood grains, making it very flexible to integrate into your kitchen plan.

The third and final hardwood countertop is the end grain wood look.  The advantages of this style are numerous.  This style countertop withstands knife and other sharp instruments cuts much better than the other styles and has a tendency to wear evenly.  You can also expect the end grain wood style to hold the edges of a knife more firmly, making it the safer choice as well.

The Benefits of Basement Finishing Panels

Friday, September 12th, 2008

When you first thought about remodeling and finishing the basement to give your family more living space, the picture you had in your mind was all about a finished product with carpeted floors and nice furniture.  You know that there is work to be done before you get to that point and that basements have special challenges that have to be addressed in order to protect the investment you put into your home.  One aspect of protecting the new room from the common moisture of the basement is basement finishing panels.  Let’s take a look at why you need to have your contractor install these panels and what they can do for the value of your basement remodel.

As mentioned, the biggest reason for the need for basement finishing panels is moisture.  We tend to think of concrete as this impregnable material that can’t be compromised.  In reality, it is incredibly porous and takes on water and moisture rather quickly.  It is estimated that even new home constructions develop water moisture seepage in five to ten years.  Basement finishing panels are used to stop moisture from getting to your newly remodeling painted walls and nice flooring.

Basement Finishing Panels

Besides water protection, there are other considerable advantages to using basement finishing panels.  They make the work much faster and easier on the contractor’s crew, which translates into labor savings for you.  A common complaint about basement is the dank smell that sometimes is present due to water seepage.  Basement panels help eliminate that odor adding value and comfort to the room or rooms.  Those basement finishing panels are also very important for stopping the spread of mildew and certain types of mold from accessing the ventilation system of your home resulting in a healthier environment.

Be sure to talk to your contractor about installing basement finishing panels.  You will be very happy you did.  In the end you will be left with a useable, comfortable remodel that adds value and beauty to your home.

Moisture And Crawl Space Mold Removal

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Many people feel that if they can’t decorate or use the space in their home on a daily basis, then it isn’t important.  They usually are talking about areas like attics and crawl spaces.  This way of thinking can be incredibly bad for your home though.  Let’s consider the crawl space.  This area of the home is highly susceptible to moisture.  As any good contractor worth their weight in gold can tell you, moisture leads to all kinds of problems.  For example, let’s take a look at crawl space mold removal and you can decide if your crawl space maintenance is important or not.

In short, if you have mold in your crawl space, you have moisture problems.  Mold has to be eliminated for safety and good health.  It doesn’t really matter if anyone in your home has allergies or asthma, mold can eventually adversely affect the health of anyone who has exposure to it long enough.  The key element in crawl space mold removal is fixing the moisture problem. Your contractor will have to figure out where the moisture is coming from and how they can fix it.

Crawl Space Mold Removal

The first problem to consider is poor ventilation.  It doesn’t matter how well insulated the crawl space is, if it doesn’t allow for the moisture that does seep in to dry, mold and mildew are likely to appear.  Another problem that could come up with the crawl space area is that some people will try to fix the problem themselves and install cheap plastic sheeting over the ground of the crawl space and cover that with a material like pea gravel.  While it might help a little bit, it’s still not enough to stop the production of mold or get rid of any existing mold.

If you want to ensure that crawl space mold removal is done correctly, you will be much better off to call in the professionals.  Contractors have a better idea of what they are looking at and can determine that your crawl space is health hazard free.
